A rabbit is a small furry mammal of the family Leporidae, of the order Cyprinus (lizards and slugs). rabbits are extremely small animals in the genus Suillus. Oryctolagus maximus has the common European rabbit species and its many descendants, the world’s oldest and most widely distributed domestic rabbit, the European white rabbit. Sylvilagus contains 13 wild rabbit varieties, including the seven mentioned in this article.

Rabbits do not have vocal cords, but their vocal cords are highly developed when they are babies, so they make soft babbles that consist of many different tones. Their calls are high-pitched and pleasant to hear. Because of the importance of rabbits in our economy, we now enjoy many free-range bunnies, mainly because they keep us healthy and reduce the number of unwanted creatures in our yards.

Domestic rabbits are usually native to Europe, the Middle East and Asia, but can be found in parts of North America as well. The most common species is the rabbit known as the outline or Californian. These are mostly gray or brown with black strips on their undersides. They are less vocal than their American relatives and are usually found living in houses. Unlike hares, rabbits have longer hind legs with two pairs of toes instead of three, which make their movement more clumsy.

Some other common species are the red-collared nesolagus, which are native to southwestern China and Korea; the yellow-collared nesolagus, which are native to central Mexico; the black-collared nesolagus, which are native to central China; and the white-collared nesolagus, which are native to central Thailand. The Chinese outline or Californian rabbit is the most popular domestic rabbit, being far easier to care for and breed. It is also the oldest known rabbit and was first bred commercially in San Francisco, California in 1820. The yellow-collared nesolagus, which was probably introduced by traders to confuse the rabbit populations in India, has slightly longer legs than the other species.

While rabbits are quite vulnerable to predators, mainly foxes, some threats pose little risk to them. They tend to live near plants and are therefore easy to spot by hunters. Several Asian countries have been involved in a fierce debate over whether or not to protect their rabbits against locally extinct predatory species such as the double-headed boar. The government in India and several US states have been fighting over protecting the animals, with each side saying that they are a natural prey for the other.

A major threat to the rabbit is immigration. As more Asians get illegally into the USA and settle in all the high-traffic areas, many rabbit populations are being decimated. The long fight between IUCN and extinction continues. The recent discovery of the previously unknown iucnstrum horridum in Costa Rica is a turning point for the species. However, with the increase of humans in the area and the legal hunt for the rabbit also increasing, there is little doubt that the IUCN will soon take control of the landscape of this remarkable landmass.
